Synopsis

After a variety of animals get stuck one by one in bubble gum melting in the road, they must survive encounters with a big blue truck and a burly black bear.

Susie Wilde - Children's Literature

Lisa Wheeler, a mistress of word play for the young, also has a new silly story, Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum which features a number of animals stuck and struggling to free themselves from "chewy-gooey", "icky-sticky" melty gum on the road. There are lots of glorious rhythms as these animals' bad situations mount too dire. Will they escape the honk-honk truck bearing down on them? They must work together to "chew, and chew, and chew and chew and chew" to create a "light and lifty," "nifty drifty" bubble which "bobbles through the air". But the story doesn't end there, there's a hint of more sticky mayhem in the animal world! 2004, Little Brown, Ages 2 to 4.

PreS-K-A fast-paced, rhyming story with vibrant, bouncing illustrations. A toad begins the tale about a gob of bubble gum found on the road. Before long, the little creature gets stuck, is joined by a shrew, a goose, a bee, and a crow. A truck is zooming down the road so the only way out of this sticky predicament is to chew, chew, chew. That is just what the animals do until a bear comes by and more trouble seems imminent. Fortunately, it gets stuck, a hen comes along, and the adventure begins anew. Enjoyable and energetic, this repetitive tale is just the kind of wacky fun that young children love.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Maximum rhythm and maximum rhyme spin this story of sticky peril for an eclectic group of animals forced to learn the value of teamwork. "Bubble gum, / bubble gum, / Chewy-gooey bubble gum, / Icky-sticky bubble gum / Melting in the road. / Along comes a toad . . . /A fine, fat toad, / A fine, fat, wild / -SPLAT!- / wart-backed toad." The gummy toad is joined in the pink slurry mess by a rude shrew, a wide white goose, an old crow, and a bumblebee. An on-coming truck then threatens the fighting fivesome! What do they do? They chew and chew! And their joint bubble floats them to safety. Wheeler has written another silly winner that toddlers will beg for again and again at storytime. Huliska-Beith's illustrations in acrylic, cloth, and paper are bright and wacky in this sweet collaboration. (Picture book. 2-6)
