Bulldogs developed in England. Bred for their strength and fierceness. they were once fighting dogs. Even though they are fierce looking, bulldogs are actually very friendly. They enjoy being around other animals, including cats, most of the time. Bulldogs are strong and quiet but are also stubborn. They have wide shoulders, a flat forehead and a blunt muzzle with short, flat noses that make it difficult for them to breathe. Too much exercise can be dangerous to a bulldog as it can become overheated and unable to breathe properly. Bulldogs do well in air-conditioned homes, but do not thrive well in very hot or cold weather. If they are outside they need lots of shade. They also need a lot of water to help prevent becoming overheated. When bulldog puppies are born their heads are very large. This can be dangerous and the birthing dog may need help during the birth process. Also, mother bulldogs are clumsy and may accidentally sit on their puppies so they have to be watched carefully. This book is one in the series of "Dog Set IV." It has great pictures of bulldogs and a glossary of terms as well as a page listing web sites with more information about dogs. The book is very informative about the bulldog breed.
