Children's Literature

Boxers have been around since the 1800s. They were possibly named for the way they look when they fight. They stand on their hind legs and look like a human boxer. These dogs are very intelligent and strong. They are used with search and rescue, to help the blind and are good pets as well as show dogs. Boxers are strong and muscular and need plenty of exercise. These medium size, short hair dogs can weigh about 65 to 80 pounds. Sometimes they have difficulty breathing because of their blunt shaped muzzles. Their large eyes, which hardly have eyelashes, could easily become infected. They love to play with toys and can even play Frisbee. Boxers love attention and do not like to play alone very long. Boxers need obedience training, without which they are not very well behaved. This breed of dog is mostly an inside dog and cannot handle very hot or very cold weather well. Boxer puppies are usually born in a litter of 8 or 9. They grow fast, are playful but need a lot of rest. This book is well-written and very informative about boxers. There are many pictures included as well as a glossary and a page that lists web sites with more information about dogs. This book is one in the series of "Dog Set IV."
