Synopsis

An introduction to the physical characteristics and behavior of butterflies.

Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D. - Children's Literature

Stunning photographs of caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies abound in this informative picture book. As the book opens, a butterfly rests on bright orange tiger lilies: the text tells children that "[n]o insect changes as much as a butterfly." The text and photographs that follow dramatically illustrate the truth of this statement. Children see larvae crawling out of an egg; a spiny caterpillar that has grown new skin; a fat caterpillar attaching itself to a twig; a chrysalis; and glorious butterflies. The text offers beginning readers some challenges in a positive way and is supported by a glossary at the back of the book. Each page spread provides three or four sentences on the left-hand side, and a close up photograph on the right-hand side. This title, which is one in the publisher's "Let's Read About Insects" series, presents a fine introduction to the fascinating world of butterflies. This series is designed to help children gain reading skills as they learn about topics in nature. The vivid photographs capture the beauty and wonder of butterflies. Text and photographs will engage children as they learn key facts. The book is sized perfectly for young hands and is recommended for school and home libraries. Books and websites for additional information about butterflies are listed in the back of this title. 2004, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 4 to 7.
