Synopsis

In Going by Car, readers learn about cars of the past, assembly lines, sports cars, station wagons, minivans, SUVs, cars of the future, and special cars such as race cars, taxis, limos, and police cars.

Sharon Oliver - Children's Literature

This volume in the Weekly Reader produced series "Going Places" is the weakest but is still a useful addition to most collections. The four chapter book begins with a history of the car including a brief discussion of Henry Ford and his assembly line method of production. The different types of modern cars are described, covering SUV's, sports cars and minivans. Special cars are given their own chapter, which covers police cars, taxis, racecars and limousines. Photographs or illustrations related to the text appear on every page, enhancing the readability for young children. The author includes a table of contents, glossary, index and references for further print and web reading. A nice addition for all libraries. 2004, Weekly Reader, Ages 5 to 8.
