School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-These books have bold, bright, full-page paintings throughout. In the first title, Llewellyn depicts the metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to butterfly and introduces other insects and plants that live among monarchs at various stages of life. In the second title, readers watch the transformation from egg to tadpole to frog and meet other flora and fauna that live in a pond. There are two layers to the texts. Larger, bold type gives all the necessary information to describe the conversion from egg to adult and is suitable for reading aloud in the classroom or library, while a smaller, captionlike font provides additional information that enriches the material. The graduated, sturdy pages reveal more and more of each ecosystem. Each book includes a combined scientific glossary and index. A simple diagram that illustrates the life cycle of each subject is appended. The interesting page sizes and full-page illustrations will appeal to young naturalists.-Christine E. Carr, Lester C.
