Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: David M. Albala, MD(Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: The field of urology is undergoing a rapid transformation and the seventh edition of this book is the most comprehensive textbook ever written.
Purpose: In this edition, 32 new authors have helped contribute 22 new chapters. An encyclopedic approach has been used for each topic; whenever possible, the authors have discussed in detail the physiology, pathophysiology, and medical and surgical management of each disease process. The book is very thorough and discusses in detail the controversial aspects of management.
Audience: The audience includes students, residents, and practicing urologists.
Features: The textbook is easy to use and editors use bold type to emphasize important concepts, making it easier to glean the essence from each chapter. The 3400+ pages cover all aspects of urology in both the pediatric and adult populations. The organization of every section is logical and the typesetting is clear and easy to read. Figures are liberally used throughout the text and are composed of operative photographs, equipment photographs, diagrams, and algorithms. Operative photographs and radiographs especially are much clearer in this text than in most. The chapters are complete and lucid tables summarizing the literature on a given topic are common.
Assessment: This seventh edition is much better and more complete than any of the previous editions. It belongs in the personal library of any urologist who wishes to refer to an authoritative textbook in urology.
