Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

A lot of thought has gone into the design of this entry in the "Rookie Toddler" tabbed board book series. The teaching of colors is set up like a game. A question is asked and when the answer is derived kids clap their hands and make a sound or take an action. The page borders match the color and the color word is printed in the appropriate color. There are vehicles, flowers, balls, fruit and insects. The really nice feature is that they are all labeled. This makes it very easy for caregivers and parents to ask questions such as "Can you find the butterfly" since they will know where the butterfly is on the page. Also, the items in each spread repeat the five colors that are featured so parents could say "find all the red items in the book." Furthermore, the book can be used to emphasize counting from one to five. The final spread displays all the colors and offers a tip to parents and caregivers. One of the better books in a very good series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
