Reviewer:Carlos D Giraldo, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This book explains the tools of modern genetics and genomics behind the bedside observations ingrained into generations of cardiovascular practitioners. A useful appendix provides simple definitions of the various concepts.
Purpose:It is designed to outline advances in gene discovery, and to describe how finding these genes might inform new approaches to practice while also raising new concerns. It is intended as an introduction to the basic principles, methodologies, and statistical issues, and how this new knowledge may be incorporated into practice. It also provides an overview of the state of the art of genetics and genomics as applied to cardiovascular diseases, including variability in drug responsiveness. These important objectives are met with concise, yet thorough explanations.
Audience:Cardiovascular practitioners are the primary audience, but the many expert authors have produced a book that has relevance for clinicians at all levels of training.
Features:The authors start with a detailed overview of the relevant statistical principles and methods. They then transition into clinical practice with a discussion of the genetics of thromboembolism and long QT syndrome, to name a few. The chapters further understanding of the genetics behind various disease states, including platelet function and arterial thrombosis and provide detailed discussions of pharmacogenetic medicine and tailored therapy.
Assessment:This excellent book highlights the many advances in this field, and educates cardiovascular practitioners about what aspects of cardiology are likely to lend themselves to pharmacogenetics and tailored therapy.
