Children's Literature

Kids love to draw. The great thing about drawing is that it only requires the most basic of tools that are readily available: paper and pencil. This series, "Ready Set Draw!" includes titles that are guaranteed to be popular with kids of all ages. Sample topics include horses, dogs, cats, cars, trucks, and motorcycles. What makes this series unique among the literally hundreds of "how to draw" books are the color-coded lines and shapes illustrating the proper sequence for developing each drawing. This mimics how artists draw and helps build a solid foundation for drawing skills. Each completed drawing as shown in the book is a fully colored image placed on a photograph, putting the object or animal in an appropriate environment. This encourages young artists to use colored pencils to finish their drawings and provides an image to use as reference. In this volume about trucks and motorcycles, readers learn to draw a convertible, a monster truck, a Ferrari, a dirt bike, and a Jeep among others. Reviewer: Kristin Harris

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4–A bright, harmonious color scheme and catchy titles make this series catnip for the artistically inclined. Little to no contextual information is included, in favor of loading each book with 8-to-10 step-by-step drawings for kids to duplicate. Single-subject titles such as Cats and Horses demonstrate how to draw a variety of breeds in a variety of poses. The gendered titles include some lessons that both sexes will enjoy: Boy Stuff includes a dragon and Girl Stuff teaches how to draw a soccer player. Unfortunately, the instructional diagrams can be frustrating. The first few steps, in which the artist builds an armature of simple shapes, are easy, but most children will find the outlines that the artist uses to join the shapes and define the drawing difficult to duplicate. Secondary purchases where interest dictates.
