Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to prepare medical students for the psychiatry shelf exam and for USMLE Step II.
Audience: The book, according to the authors, is targeted at third-year medical students rotating on their psychiatry clerkship and studying for USMLE Step II. However, in my opinion, the book is thorough enough that junior residents in psychiatry would find it useful.
Features: The book is divided into several sections. The first two advise students on the approach to psychiatric patients and review treatment modalities. The third section, which makes up the majority of the book, consists of 60 clinical vignettes. Each case is accompanied by review questions, and a thorough discussion of the case and questions follows. This section of the book is simply excellent, with concise case scenarios, very good USMLE-style questions, very detailed answers and explanations, and clinical pearls. Two or three references are offered at the end of each vignette. There are no illustrations, but a few tables are included. A thorough index concludes the book.
Assessment: There are many review books available for medical students, but this is one of the better ones I have reviewed recently. It is straightforward, easy to read, and well organized. The content is thorough, the clinical pearls helpful, and the review questions excellent. This book would be quite useful for medical students and junior psychiatry residents.
