Synopsis
Drawing upon extensive original research in early Victorian writings on subjects ranging from religious thought to sanitary reform, Heather Glen places the novels of Charlotte Brontë in their socio-historical context. She contends that Brontë's writings are intelligently crafted and that she was much more aware of and responsive to her early nineteenth century world than is generally believed. The author teaches English at the University of Cambridge. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
