Publishers Weekly

A beak cracks through an orange pop-up egg—“crick crack crickety crack”—and out pops a yellow chick whose loud “cheep!” brings its mother rushing to its side. She's a red chicken with a three-fingered crest, and together they eat and rest (in between, the chick also “poops,” and readers will delight in turning a wheel to make the chick's droppings fall to the ground). Humor, bold colors, and clever engineering make for a simple, memorable package. Ages 1–3. (Feb.)

Kirkus Reviews

A little yellow chick hatches and experiences its first day in a simple, graphically striking narrative spiced up by graphic tableaux. "Egg cracks / crick crack crickitty crack"—an orange beak pokes out of a pop-out egg. The simple sentences are complemented on each spread by sound effects and word balloons ("cheep!"). Vere's cartoons are simple and funny, outlined boldly and featuring big goggly eyes; they are set against eye-poppingly bright backgrounds. Aimed at toddlers, the humor is appropriately juvenile, with a nod to the parents who are reading it aloud. "Chick poops" is activated by a wheel that sends little brown pellets shooting to the ground while mummy rolls her eyes. Beware, though: The relatively light stock will probably fall victim to the first or second clutching toddler fist—it's not for the long haul. (Pop-up. 1-3)

School Library Journal

PreS—Closely monitored by red mother hen, a yellow chick hatches, cheeps, gets a hug, eats, poops, and sleeps. Vere provides two- to three-word phrases on each of the seven spreads, along with sound effects like "crick crack crickitty crack" and "peepo!" The backgrounds are solid, often bright hues that provide even more punch for fun views of the huge-eyed chick with spindly legs. Instead of a pop-up, the "elimination" scene offers a turning wheel of pellets, and the final sleep vignette has baby tucked under mom's liftable wing. Toddlers are an ideal audience for this lark.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
