Gr 7 Up-- This updated edition is as comprehensive as its predecessor (Watts, 1988) and organized along similar lines. Four types of abuse are discussed in depth: beating and neglect, sexual abuse, incest, and child pornography. In addition to tragic real life examples, Dolan presents the findings of studies conducted by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services and by the National Center on Child Abuse Prevention. He traces the history of the ill treatment of children and theorizes about the causes of abuse today. The work of children's advocates and innovative programs such as hot-lines, ``crisis nurseries,'' and support groups of voluntary associations are cited. Explanations of sexual victimization are straightforward and nonsensational. The author writes clearly, putting the problem of abuse in proper perspective. His is a positive view of the world in which most families are caring, and most adults wish to be helpful. He aims to inform, not to frighten. Older children will find practical strategies for self-protection and for protection of younger at-risk children. ``Child Abuse'' (Messner, 1900) by Landau is a fine work, but is more general and lacks currency. --Libby K. Dolan updates his 1980 edition by expanding the text and including up-to-date information on subjects such as programs set up to help families and children harmed by child abuse. In addition to discussing the passage of legislation and controversies arising from new child abuse laws, he includes source notes for the text and brings the bibliography up to date. A good resource for young people seeking information on the subject.Book Details
