Children's Literature - Ru Story-Huffman

A photographic look at the children of the country of Belize, this book features lush photos and interesting text. The photographs are the main "draw" to this book, as they are very clear, colorful, and show a variety of children participating in numerous activities. The children presented are going about their everyday activities of play, work, fun and school. The backgrounds in the photographs are often of the beautiful countryside of this small, Central American nation. The text can be a bit long in places, but it does offer insight into the country, children, history and customs. Children of Belize are introduced through the text, and this provides a good point of reference for readers of the book. Children of Belize would be a good book for use in a Social Studies classroom, or for a public library or school library media center.

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4Two pleasant and informative overviews that present the rich variety of cultures in these two countries by introducing a number of children and their ways of life. The texts flow smoothly from one child to the next and are accompanied by a wealth of clear, vibrant, color photographs. Because the material is of a general nature, these titles are more suitable as supplements for multicultural units rather than as primary resources for reports. The indexes are useful, but the pronunciation guides are surprisingly meager, leaving out a number of difficult-to-pronounce place names. Overall, these titles will enhance solid geography collections.Donna L. Scanlon, Lancaster County Library, PA
