Synopsis

An introduction to the geography, history, culture, and people of China.

Children's Literature

The "First Reports" series is a welcome addition to a market lacking in books for young children that focus on foreign countries and cultures. The format of China makes it very easy for young children to read and should hold their interest. The book includes a glossary and index, a list of important dates for the country, a resource list for further information, and an "At a Glance" section that lists language, capital, population, money and more. Each two-page spread features at least one large photo, map, or drawing with a descriptive caption. It focuses on the unique geography, culture, and history of China, including Confucius, the Great Wall, the Silk Road, Marco Polo, Communism, language, calligraphy, the opera, food and Chinese festivals. It gives children Chinese phrases to learn, however, there is no pronunciation help for difficult words. This is a wonderful introduction to China, and should be very useful for second grade teachers. 2001, Compass Point Books, $21.26. Ages 6 to 8. Reviewer: Elizabeth Pabrinkis
