Children's Literature
Another fantastic edition of the "Many Cultures, One World" series, this book focuses on the geography, history, culture, and customs of China. Readers can learn the basics of using chopsticks, cook a Chinese birthday treat, create Chinese New Year decorations, and much more. The text is large print and easy to read; striking photographs augment the text, making this book a perfect resource for elementary school students. Combine that with an index of "words to know," additional books in print to read, addresses where students can get more information (i.e. the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association), and the Web address of a kid-friendly search engine, and this book is ideal for students who are working on research projects. It is not meant to be used exclusively as a resource, however. It would be an excellent addition to any classroom library; students would certainly read this book outside of their studies. 2003, Bridgestone Books,β Christine Amyot
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Slim cultural introductions. Each book begins with a fact box and a full-page, simple map followed by information on family life, customs, pets, legends, and more. However, for each of these topics only one or two facts are offered. Each volume also includes an easy recipe and instructions for an art activity. The print is large and well spaced and the many color photos are labeled. The "Words to Know" and "To Learn More" sections are of limited use, but the "Useful Addresses" and "Internet Sites" are helpful. In fact, the publisher's Web site will link students to some sites that give far more information than the books.-Nancy A.
