Chinese immigration to North America began in the nineteenth century. One need only to think back to the building of the Transcontinental Railroad after the Civil War to recall the heroic efforts some Chinese immigrants made to shape their new homelands. However, Chinese immigrants have experienced bitter moments as well. Racial prejudice and unfair legal practices dogged the lives of early Chinese immigrants. Fortunately, as this well-written and amply illustrated book points out, the Chinese who came to North America established deep and healthy roots. This book, a volume in the series entitled "The Changing Face of North America," describes the history of Chinese immigration to North America, the problems they encountered, and their contributions to their new societies. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 12 up.
