It is not about the pathology associated with chronic illness, rather, its much broader purpose is to assist care providers in understanding how chronic illness alters the lives of clients and their families and to offer healthcare practitioners information on how to address the complex and multifaceted needs of individuals with chronic illness. The book is written for nurses, but would be helpful to any healthcare professional who works with chronically ill people. It comprehensively discusses issues faced by chronically ill people, such as chronic pain, body image, stigmas associated with illness, education about illness, financial concerns, and death. It also covers specific topics related to the care of chronically ill children and the elderly. The authors covered this complex topic comprehensively. This would be an excellent source book for any healthcare practitioner who cares for individuals who are chronically ill.

The purpose is to expand health professionals' knowledge of chronicity so that they can better help their clients take on the responsibilities of self-care management while providing sensitive care. The book meets the author's objectives in an exemplary way. The book targets healthcare practitioners, but it is also an excellent text for undergraduate or graduate students. The author and the contributors are highly credible authorities on the subject. The book is appropriately illustrated. It contains current, pertinent references at the end of each chapter. The overall appearance of the book is very artistic. Numerous case studies, a section in each chapter on nursing diagnosis and study questions at the end of each chapter are included. This is the third edition of this outstanding textbook on chronic illness. Additional information in this edition supplements the very useful, high quality content provided in previous editions. The book presents a thoughtful, sensitive, and very necessary discussion of the concerns surrounding chronic illness. There are few other books on the market that provide an in-depth look at these issues. The reviewer would highly recommend purchase of this book by healthcare practitioners, graduate and undergraduate students, libraries, andhealthcare bookstores.
