A life in the outdoors led curious-minded Clarence Birdseye to the career that would make him a household name for years to come. After growing up in New York and New Jersey, Clarence went to college in Massachusetts. He enjoyed his biology studies, but ran out of money. Wanting to use his knowledge of animals, he became a fur trader in Canada. After observing Inuit freezing fish, Clarence began to experiment with freezing foods. Several years later, he found some partners and opened a frozen foods company using his own quick-freezing method. Later, the company was purchased by General Foods and renamed "Birds Eye Frosted Foods," thus securing for Clarence's name a place on the lips of consumers. Readers will be interested to learn that Clarence was an inveterate inventor who had more than 300 patents to his name at the time of his death. Includes a timeline, trivia facts, a glossary, and a list of additional books about related topics. 2003, Heinemann Library, Ages 6 to 10.βHeidi Hauser Green
