Children's Literature

This book is part of the "Green Generation" series of science books designed to tackle big topics and break them down into understandable and useful chunks of information. With stunning photographs and astounding statistics, the book provides a readable explanation of global warming and its effects around the world. It also explores some big-ticket technological solutions, as well as some small steps that all of us can take to reduce our carbon footpath. Interspersed throughout the book are quotes from famous athletes, politicians, and environmental activists. The book gives examples of what ordinary students have done to conserve energy and make a difference in their communities; these examples are inspiring and can empower readers to get involved. One of the most valuable sections of the book is a one-page discussion of critical thinking about global warming called "Consider the Source," which should be required reading for all students. This book, like others in the "Green Generation" series, will make an excellent addition to the classroom. Parents who are looking to encourage their children to get interested in science should definitely consider this series. At sixty-three pages, it is easy to read and contains suggestions for related material on the Internet. Reviewer: Leona Illig

School Library Journal

Gr 7-9– Strong visual appeal is this series' best asset. The cover design, layout, and graphics feel hip and of the moment. The clear writing is easy to understand and includes many concrete examples of environmentally friendly practices. Rather than focusing on a small, specific aspect of issues, these chatty narratives take a broader approach, with chapters covering everything from the Clean Air Act (Protecting the Planet) and the politics of global warming (Climate Fever) to using energy-efficient light bulbs (Green Living) and how hydropower works (Alternative Energy). Although there are many charts, tables, and photographs, diagrams are strangely absent from the texts. Nevertheless, these are good choices for both leisure reading and reports.
