Rihoko Ueno - Children's Literature
All the books in the "My Five Senses" series, including Smell, are attractive and full of visually arresting images. It is characteristic of the series to convey complex ideas in a simple way. Information, such as objects with pleasant or unpleasant smells, is presented to the reader in lists. Although the text sticks to basic facts such as the way the brain interprets smells or odor molecules, there are also tidbits of information at the bottom of most pages about the way various animals and insects experience scent. Nonetheless, these books are probably best approached as being more introductory than informative. There is an index, vocabulary section and a list of further sources for reading as well as a "hands on" page with an experiment on scent recognition and association. The large-print of varying colors and the vibrant photographs that accompany the text make this book very reader-friendly. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 4 to 6.
