Doody Reviews
Reviewer: Whitney L Boglioli, Masters Cand. (Boston University College of Health & Rehabilitation)Description: This is a comprehensive resource of the variety of tasks required of speech-language pathology students entering a graduate program. It outlines the guidelines and behavioral conduct of student clinicians, and provides synopses of various disorders and possible treatments. This is an update of the 2005 edition.
Purpose: The authors intend to provide a single comprehensive source of the expectations of and information about the clinical practicum, as well as the methodologies used in the field. This inclusive manual prepares students for the demands and behaviors of the field by providing descriptions of various disorders and their assessments and treatments.
Audience: The book is intended for students in speech-language pathology who are about to begin their clinical practicum, as well as for supervisors of a clinical practicum. It also should be recommended for students interested in majoring and/or entering the field of speech-language pathology.
Features: A wide range of information is covered, from the ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) ethics code to ways to decrease undesirable client behavior. The latter topic and the information on specific disorders provide some insight, and should be used only for reference. Topics such as initial client contact and the assessment of clients are covered in great detail. Included is a comprehensive glossary and an index.
Assessment: This book explains the composition, purpose, and rules of the clinical practicum. While it should not be used as a treatment manual, it does provide an overview of important treatment methods of communicative disorders. Due to its rather small size, students will find it easy to carry as a reference.
