Description:Students, researchers, and clinicians who want to understand how research can assist them in their clinical practice and to incorporate research into their practice will find the important topics of design, statistics, grants, research ethics, treatment evaluation, and evidence-based practice covered in this book.
Purpose:This is intended as a comprehensive review of how to design and conduct clinical research, and how to apply research results to the professions. Given the need for evidence-based practice and accountability, these are worthy objectives, which the book meets.
Audience:This book is written for students and professionals in both speech-language pathology and audiology. It is written clearly enough for students and those not consistently doing research, yet has information pertinent for those who are engaged in research. These authors have written many books on research design.
Features:For students, this book covers research ethics as well as basic research design and measurement. For clinicians, it covers test and treatment evaluation and information on evidence-based practice. For researchers, it covers grant information. The authors have made excellent use of tables to summarize large amounts of information. The emphasis on examples from research in the field is also an asset. A good glossary of terms is provided. For students, the inclusion of discussion questions at the end of the chapters is a good idea.
Assessment:This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in research. The inclusion of information on ethics, grant writing, treatment outcomes, and evidence-based practice as well as the more standard information on design and statistics set this apart from other research design books. The text is well organized, and the writing is clear and understandable. It would make an excellent textbook for a research design course.
