School Library Journal

PreS-- Concept books that do a respectable job of introducing their respective topics, with full-color photographs that are clear, crisp, and simply captioned. Multicultural children are posed in color-coordinated and accessorized outfits in Clothes . Nature includes double-page spreads of flowers, mini-beasts, trees, animals of towns and country, birds, and more in an attractive but not very informative overview. Shopping features an assortment of stores and products such as French pastries and multicolored peppers. Things That Go uses common toys and model vehicles to illustrate such items as sports cars, a working tow truck, railroad cars, cement mixer, combine harvester, space shuttle, and a submarine. The other volumes all focus on real objects. However, many other titles offer similar exposure to these subjects in more generic contexts, and, except for Nature, with less of an upper-middle-class focus. --Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston
