Reviewer:Lauren A Abrardo, Pharm.D.(Coatesville VA Medical Center)
Description:This book describes complementary and alternative medicine practices of homeopathy, herbalism, aromatherapy, and traditional Chinese and Indian medicine. The first edition was published in 2002.
Purpose:The purpose is to increase awareness of contemporary and alternative medicines among healthcare providers who practice orthodox medicine and when these traditions should be considered in their practice. This is a worthy objective because more people are turning to alternative therapies and providers should have a general knowledge of these therapies.
Audience:Although intended for pharmacists, the book seems better suited for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
Features:The book covers a wide range of topics, including the different practices in alternative medicine, how to work up a patient, what alternative medications are used for specific symptoms, how homeopathic medications are prepared, and what foods can be used to treat certain conditions. The index is very user friendly and allows readers to find the information they need quickly. Although the book contains information on the different medicines such as use, dose, and side effects, it could have been better organized into tables. It would have helped to have more information on interactions with orthodox prescription medications, since many patients use a combination of both.
Assessment:This well written book offers a good description of alternative medicine. However, I don't see myself turning to this book first when I need information for my practice.
