From The Critics

Reviewer:Katie L Dennis, MD(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description:Written by an international group of experts, this completely updated cytology book provides in-depth coverage of all aspects of cytology from collection methods and staining to diagnostic techniques and ancillary studies. Included with the book is access to an online version of the full text and all images. Because many updates to the field have taken place since the previous edition was published in 1997, including liquid-based cytology, HPV testing, and automation, this new edition was necessary.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide an update that incorporates advances in the field while keeping the emphasis on cytomorphology, which will be valuable to all professionals working in the field of cytopathology.
Audience:All professionals in cytopathology will benefit from this comprehensive book, including residents, fellows, practicing pathologists, and cytotechnologists.
Features:This truly comprehensive cytology book starts with chapters on cell structure and function and basics of cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics, and moves on to cover the full spectrum of cytologic specimens, collection methods, FNA techniques, and diagnostics. Chapters cover management, evaluating specimens following treatment, and more modern techniques such as molecular diagnostics, virtual microscopy, and automation. The book thoroughly covers all body sites and includes 1,700 color illustrations. The accompanying access to the online version is a nice addition and the site is easy to navigate, fully searchable, and has clear pictures.
Assessment:Thisis one of the most comprehensive and up to date cytology books available. Access to an online version is a great bonus. The updates are timely and well constructed. Overall this is an excellent book that will be a valuable resource for professionals in the field of cytopathology.
