Overview

Diagnostic Cytopathology provides the clinician with a comprehensive guide to the diagnostic applications of exfoliative and aspiration cytology. The book takes a systemic approach and will cover the recognised normal and abnormal cytological findings encountered in a particular organ. Appropriate histopathological correlations and a consideration of the possible differential diagnosis accompany the cytological findings. The book is heavily illustrated to ensure that it will be a practical resource for daily reference in the laboratory. A uniformity of basic chapter structure will expedite the clinician's search for answers to any query.
  • in-depth bench book that covers everyday diagnostic work. Provides the clinician with an accessible guide to diagnostic investigation and screening.
  • Cytologic findings closely related to histology.
  • Provides the general diagnostic pathologist in the interpretation and recognition of tissue samples.
  • Each chapter provides a summary of major diagnostic criteria and discusses the pitfalls and limitations of cytology. Enables the clinician to use cytology services more effectively.
  • Major revisions of the following chapters: Mesotheliomas, Malignant Breast Tumours, Lymph Nodes, The Pathogenesis of Cervical Neoplasia, Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and Squamous Carcinoma of the Cervix.
  • Brand new chapter on Automation which is increasingly important in cervical screening.
  • Additional material on Thin Core Biopsy technique which is increasingly used in Breast Screening Program.
  • Inclusion of new genetic markers in immunohistochemistry increasingly important innon-gynaecological areas.

With 47 additional contributors.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Editorials

From the Publisher

It is brilliant...entries are well described and illustrated. The sections detailing manual techniques are surprisingly interesting and informative. I regard this book as an essential benchbook for all departmental cytoscreening and reporting rooms, and strongly recommend all interested individuals to purchase a copy.

This compilation of comprehensive diagnostic exfoliative and aspiration cytology applications deals primarily with light microscopic morphologic features of disease processes organized by organ system. In the past seven years a number of comprehensive cytology texts have been published, and although this area seems inundated with reference books, this book stands out because of its ease of use, logical organization, and extensive use of color photomicrographs. This substantial textbook is structured as a working benchbook for the cytotechnologist, pathologist in training, cytopathology fellow, and the cytopathologist. An edited book with multiple authors can often have a problem with continuity of writing styles and overlap and/or omissions in content. However, this book's writing style is consistent throughout, and the only significant overlap is in coverage of the thymus in chapters 3 and 20. The authorship represents worldwide authorities in cytopathology, particularly from Europe and Australia. This leads to some idiosyncrasies of terminology such as the Bethesda System in gynecologic cytology and the Working Formulation for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, which are primarily used in North America and are used secondarily in the text. The text has a bright open, easily readable appearance, and its organization by organ system is quite workable. A useful feature of this chapter layout is a brief discussion of normal cytology followed by specific disease processes each having a section of pertinent cytological findings and diagnostic pitfalls. The index is well cross referenced, and the chapter bibliographies are up-to-date with references as recent as 1992. Minor shortcomings are theattempt to be encyclopedic and the lack of color photomicrographs for the rarer disease processes. I recommend this well-illustrated comprehensive text of cytopathology as a necessary adjunct to the light microscope for the clinical practice of cytopathology.

British, Australian, and Swedish specialists provide a comprehensive account of the diagnostic applications of exfoliative and aspiration cytology in laboratory use at the present time. Cytological findings and their correlation with histopathology are described for every organ system. Descriptive text, illustrations, summaries of major diagnostic criteria and discussion of the pitfalls and limitations of cytology are included for conditions with well-established findings. The rapidly expanding areas of breast screening, transplantation and investigation of immunosuppressed patients by cytology are addressed in separate chapters to highlight their increasing importance. From The Critics

Reviewer: Jami Walloch, MD(Christ Hospital and Medical Center)
Description: This compilation of comprehensive diagnostic exfoliative and aspiration cytology applications deals primarily with light microscopic morphologic features of disease processes organized by organ system.
Purpose: In the past seven years a number of comprehensive cytology texts have been published, and although this area seems inundated with reference books, this book stands out because of its ease of use, logical organization, and extensive use of color photomicrographs.
Audience: This substantial textbook is structured as a "working benchbook" for the cytotechnologist, pathologist in training, cytopathology fellow, and the cytopathologist. This leads to some idiosyncrasies of terminology such as the "Bethesda System" in gynecologic cytology and the "Working Formulation" for non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, which are primarily used in North America and are used secondarily in the text.
Features: The text has a bright open, easily readable appearance, and its organization by organ system is quite workable. A useful feature of this chapter layout is a brief discussion of normal cytology followed by specific disease processes each having a section of pertinent "cytological findings" and "diagnostic pitfalls." The index is well cross referenced, and the chapter bibliographies are up-to-date with references as recent as 1992. Minor shortcomings are the attempt to be encyclopedic and the lack of color photomicrographs for the rarer disease processes.
Assessment: I recommend this well-illustrated comprehensive text of cytopathology as a necessary adjunct to the light microscope for the clinical practice of cytopathology.
