Gr 8 Up-By combining career and character education, Bonnice drives home the point that one's career is more than just a job and that making ethical decisions helps bring more meaning and value to one's work. The book begins with an introduction explaining the importance of this connection, and then goes on to describe the early development of computer programming and operating systems, and then leads into the educational background required for different areas of programming. In all of these fields, access to confidential information makes it necessary to be prepared for facing difficult and complex situations. Numerous sidebars full of definitions, self-quizzes, inspirational quotations, and complementary information are scattered throughout as readers look at real-life tests of one's integrity and trustworthiness, respect and compassion, justice and fairness, responsibility, courage, self-discipline and diligence, and citizenship. The conversational, easy-to-read text is informative and uses natural dialogue to create realistic and challenging scenarios. Full-color photos complement the information or emphasize and help visualize the text. Each chapter concludes with a question for thought or discussion and a fitting quote from a historical philosopher or successful person. The last chapter looks at career opportunities in the field.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
