Overview

In the Concise Companion to the Jewish Religion, Jacobs brings comprehension and understanding to the many complex and important issues of Judaism. From Maimonides to Methuselah, from Kabbalah to Kibbutz, Jacobs provides an invaluable source of information for anyone wanting to learn more about the rich heritage of the Jewish religion. With all Hebrew terms clearly explained, entries range from personalities in the Bible to today's Jewish thinkers and writers, and the comprehensive coverage includes customs, traditions, and Jewish ideas on subects as diverse as dance, vegetarianism, and eternity. Including a bibliography, the Jewish calendar, and a detailed chronology, this illuminating and authoritative guide contains a wealth of data on every aspect of Jewish belief and practice, both ancient and modern.

KLIATT

This book is exactly what it purports to beβ€”a concise explanation of various terms within a Jewish context. Rabbi Jacobs has taken much from a larger volume but has done some editing to fit this smaller format. He explains Jewish concepts and prayers such as seder, mitzvah and Kiddush. For named individuals a brief description is provided. He also explains terms such as abortion, height, sport, strikes and many other common words and phrases in relation to Judaism; what they mean and what context they are used in. A brief calendar is listed at the end along with some reference material and a chronology. This is an excellent source for general information and to get YA readers started in religion discussions.
