School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Topics such as geography, history, culture, economy, people, recreation, and attractions are outlined and illustrated with sidebars and full-color photographs that have great visual appeal. These volumes satisfy the need for the typical report information and provide some extra fun facts unique to the states. Each one has an "almanac" in which students can quickly ascertain facts regarding the state bird, animal, flower, flag, etc. A time line provides history and a "gallery" introduces famous people native to each state; the indexes are thorough. Unfortunately, the maps are uncaptioned, and they are not always placed adjacent to the relevant text. All in all, though, these overviews provide generous thumbnail sketches of the states and would be welcome in any collection.-Elizabeth Fernandez, Brunswick Middle School, Greenwich, CT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
