Children's Literature

Pets are a major part of the lives of many people, not just children but adults as well. This book gives the reader instructions to make twenty-two craft-type projects that are sure to please a favorite pet. I was particularly taken with the Cat Attack Play Glove that will give your cat its daily aerobic workout. There are recipes for dog and cat treats, photo frames decorated with dog bone treats, a clever, pocket-pet palace, a goldfish garden and playful items for the birds in the house or garden. Most things could be made from extra items found around the home. The instructions are clear and precise, so projects can be accomplished in a few hours. These would make fun gifts for kids to make for their own or other people's pets. If you take Fido shopping, this is definitely an item he will bring home for you to try. 2001, Stoddart Kids, $8.95. Ages 6 up. Reviewer: Barbara Youngblood

Gr 2-4-From catnip toys to decorated collars and other ornaments, exercise toys, massaging mitts, and tasty treats, this book has something to please any furry, finned, or feathered friend. Most crafts are for dogs and cats, but pocket pets (small rodents) and birds are not ignored. Each project is described in a two-page spread. The materials lists are boxed, and the needed items are readily available in the home, grocery store, pet shop, or craft shop. The cartoon illustrations are large, colorful, humorous, and inviting. The directions are easy and clearly numbered. Some of the projects require prior knowledge of the basic running stitch in sewing. Many of them offer humorous entertainment because they encourage pets to use their natural skills. The "Pocket-Pet Playground" provides rodents with things to eat and toss; the "Tantalizing Tightrope" allows a bird to perform high-wire feats. The "Goldfish Garden" raises baby earthworms for goldfish gourmets. "Cat Attack!!!" uses small items attached by strings to the fingers of a cotton work glove to capitalize on kitty's hunting and pouncing instincts. The snack-food recipes use wholesome, natural ingredients, and might even be shared with human friends. A fun addition to pet or handicraft shelves.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
