Children's Literature

Written for first graders, this colorful book introduces young readers to various customs and traditions from around the world. The author uses bright, colorful photographs and simple text to explain customs and how people use them to celebrate various aspects of their lives. Some of the topics the author briefly discusses include methods of meeting and greeting others, the use of festivals and parades, music-and dance-related practices, the use of body decorations and costumes, arts and crafts, and storytelling. In addition to interesting facts and photos, this introductory resource also includes a glossary, a list of books for further reading, a list of related Web sites, and an index. Part of the "Spyglass Books" series. 2003, Compass Point Books,

K-Gr 2-Each spread in these beginning readers discusses one idea in two or three sentences. Customs looks at the traditions of people when they "Meet and Greet," celebrate, or make music. Eat describes some basic foods consumed around the world. Dressed gives students an introduction to (mostly traditional) clothing worn in different cultures and includes a hat-making activity. One or two line "Did You Know?" boxes (called "Extra Helping" in Eat) offer side notes explaining why some people wear black at funerals, some wear it at weddings, or other cultural differences in traditions, foods, and dress. Each of the nine spreads per book includes one small and one full-page color photo depicting people of various ages, ethnicities, and cultures. Unfortunately, a few pictures are blurry and some lack interest. In addition, not all the cultures depicted are identified. The layouts are colorful and incorporate plenty of white space; in Dressed, the borders resemble pieces of fabrics stitched together. The material presented in all the titles is extremely basic but the books may interest new readers who enjoy nonfiction.-Shauna Yusko, King County Library System, Bellevue, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
