Synopsis

Describes ways of coping with anger that help to maintain the peace.

Naomi Butler - Children's Literature

Learning to cope with your anger keeps the peace is the message of this entry in the "Sand Castle Keeping the Peace" series. Ways of maintaining the peace and examples of behavior and what the child should do to help are covered in text and pictures. It is a short book but covers much in a few words and well-chosen photographs. A glossary helps with the vocabulary. The challenge question at the end is: What can you do to keep the peace? This will help the teacher with questions and discussion, though the young reader will probably get the message without adult intervention. The format is quite attractive and easily-handled by a small child. It will contribute to a library's collection in dealing with anger. 2004, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 2-These books offer brief explanations of what each topic means and then provide ideas about how to cope with various situations. They end with the same question: "What can you do to keep the peace?" Ideas for anger management include talking to someone, taking a time out, exercise, and writing or drawing your thoughts. Some suggestions for dealing with bullies include talking with an adult, staying away from aggressors, and finding new friends. The third volume explains that different families celebrate different holidays or speak different languages. It encourages readers to learn about other ways of life through their friends. Large, full-color photographs of children of various ethnic backgrounds clearly show their feelings through facial expressions. Functional books for use in classroom discussion or with counselors.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
