Gr 5-8-A clear, well-organized introduction to the coral-reef habitats of the world. Short chapters with intriguing titles begin with an overview and go on to describe specific subjects. The pleasing and poisonous aspects of the reefs are described in ``A Wealth of Life in a Poor Neighborhood'' and ``Chemical Warfare.'' ``Fish of the Reef'' are grouped according to who eats what (or whom). ``Partners'' discusses the mutually assistive relationships that exist among the organisms. Good-quality, full-color photographs appear on almost every page. A world map indicates the locations of the reefs. Not all unfamiliar terms are defined in the text or glossary, but most are amply explained and accompanied by a pronunciation guide. Although there is more emphasis on environmental issues in Christopher Lampton's Coral Reefs in Danger (Millbrook, 1992), Pringle's chapter on ``Saving the Undersea Treasures'' demonstrates the factors that threaten these beautiful and valuable ecosystems.-Frances E. Illustrated with clear, colorful photographs, this book explores the variety of life in coral reefs. Pringle describes the physical conditions and biological partnerships that contribute to this rich, complex ecosystem. He compares the coral reef to the rain forest in terms of its diversity of life, potential benefits to humankind, and ongoing destruction of habitat. Clearly written and well illustrated, the book provides close-up views of many reef animals as well as a wider perspective on this beautiful, vulnerable ecosystem.
