Children's Literature

This title from the "Jump! Ecology" series is a generally informative package focusing half on the aquatic life and resources of the oceans and half on the damage humans wreak on the environment. The well-captioned color photographs make this useful for the researcher or browser but the workaday line-and-color wash illustrations don't compel interest. A weak story set in Fiji about a fierce shark tricked into guarding fishermen reads like a blandly told folktale, but no source is given. A glossary for words highlighted in the text, an index and a thirteen-question true or false quiz are included. Useful but not an essential purchase. 2000, Two-Can, $9.95 and $6.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
