Children's Literature

Well-constructed with an appealing format, this "Two-Can Discovery Guide" series book presents interesting information about a variety of oceanic life. Colorful drawings and informative photographs illustrate, for instance, up-to-the-minute information about "Creatures of the Deep." Each page features a topic, such as "Shallow Water," which is divided into boxed information about holdfasts and algae, a captioned picture of a dogfish, an illustration of skate egg cases, and facts about seaweed and the seahorses. A small overlaid "Quiz Corner" reviews page content with three or four memory questions. All in all, this book would provide elementary classrooms with a lively small-group discussion book or a good read-together choice, not only to inform readers about the ocean but to also illustrate the many conventions of nonfiction format. An index, a glossary of highlighted words and a selection of fascinating facts are included. 2001 (orig. 1997), Two-Can, $9.95 and $5.95. Ages 7 to 10. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
