In the first half of the 20th century magazines were a central part of American life, helping to make us what we were and showing us what we had become. The cover was believed to be the most important aspect of the magazine, stating by its appearance the tone of the publication and defining its audience. Many great illustrators labored in this era to create month after month of powerfully attractive covers. Some of the illustrators, included here. are: Neysa McMein, Helen Dryden, John Falter, Herbert Paus, Dynevor Rhys, Norman Rockwell, Frank Schoonover, Maginel Barney, J.C. Leyendecker, James Montogomery Flagg and Jessie Willcox Smith. The 95 covers are included in 9 thematic sections:
