Children's Literature
With the popularity of such TV shows as NCIS, CSI, and Bones, interest in forensics use in crime solving has reached a peak. Part of the "Solve That Crime!" series from Enslow Publishers, this book introduces readers to the various methods forensics scientists use to analyze crime scene evidence and data. Written in easy to understand language with subtopics covered in a few short paragraphs accompanied by information packed sidebars, it is ideal for the reluctant reader. Only forty-eight pages long, it explains chemical, photographic, and DNA analysis used in studying trace evidence such as fingerprints, fibers, teeth, skin, and hair, as well as in the identification of guns, bullets, and tool marks left at the crime scene. Of particular interest are the "Examine the Evidence" sidebars showing readers how to apply some of the techniques learned, and the "True Crime" sidebars which present actual case studies of the use of forensics in solving crime. The main text concludes with a discussion of skills and training required to have a successful career in the forensics field. The layout is very appealing with its use of color-coded sidebars to present supplemental information. Full color photos accompany the text. Also included is a comprehensive table of contents and index, glossary, and suggestions for further reading, both on the internet and in print. It all adds up to a quality product and a welcome addition to library shelves. Reviewer: Pat Trattles
