Children's Literature
Teaching children to make wise decisions is a never-ending challenge for parents. This text presents in a non-threatening manner, using multicultural characters, the importance of keeping a promise. Christina has been coaching her brother, Victor as he prepares to participate in the Special Olympics. Christina has promised to cheer for her brother Victor. However, when she is offered the chance to have lunch with her favorite author, she's not so sure she can keep that promise. Christina's parents allow her to make the choice by herself. This encourages Christina, and the young reader, to look at the options and decide what the right thing to do is. Characters Christina, her cousin Abby, brother Victor and friend Lisa show the reader a realistic picture of 8 to 12 year olds. This series, "The Way I Act," contains 6 books and teaches the value of successful relationships. An additional series, "The Way I Feel" deals with emotional health. This is a recommended title for pre-school collections as well as early elementary collections. It adapts well to being read aloud.
