Synopsis

Focusing on the elementary and paradigmatic, 14 papers presented by Weiss (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and Wodak (applied linguisitcs, U. of Vienna, Austria) critically examine the foundational elements of discourse-analytical research of the past 20 years. The epistemological basis for discourse analysis theory is explored in a number of papers. A second central concern is the proper role of interdisciplinary research. The papers collectively offer advice for the beginnings of a theory that integrates structural and linguistic facts, theoretical approaches, and disciplinary perspectives.
