Synopsis

Provides information on the history of Cuba and on the customs, language, religion, and experiences of Cuban Americans.

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-Bryan follows a similar outline in each of these offerings, beginning with a brief overview of the reasons why these groups emigrated from their homeland; touching on their culture, religion, and language; and listing some of their contributions to this country. Photographs, both color and black and white, and maps appear throughout. Phonetic pronunciation guides for non-English words and names are appended. Although well organized, the information is simplified to the point that the books sometimes raise more questions than they answer (e.g., "For many years, the Hmong lived in China. There, they were abused and sometimes killed"). The facts in these titles could be gleaned from encyclopedias, but libraries desiring stand-alone volumes may wish to purchase as needed.-Anna DeWind Walls, Milwaukee Public Library Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
