Michele Wilbur - Children's Literature

Millions of immigrants from around the world have made the United States their home. They included Somalis. Somalia is located in eastern Africa, on the equator, and its people have experienced famine, an unstable economy and violence. Until the 1990's there were very few Somalis in the United States, but today there are believed to be more than 50,000. They live in cities such as Atlanta, San Diego, Columbus and Minneapolis. Life in America can be very challenging as they go through the process of becoming American citizens and strive to maintain their customs, language, religion and diet. Family is very important to Somali culture, but the role of the Somali-American women is changing and many are working outside the home. Some Somalis are also becoming well known around the world including Iman, a fashion model, and Abdi Bile, an Olympian long distance runner. This "One Nation" series highlights the contributions Somalis have made to mainstream American culture. With eye-catching graphics, clear text and a glossary, this book will help to encourage young minds to learn about other cultures. 2004, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 9 to 12.
