Children's Literature

This story has appeared in many forms, ranging from a picture book to an oversized board book. George and the man with the yellow hat are joining a field trip to the firehouse. The fire chief discusses what a firefighter does, but George being the curious monkey that he is decides to do a little exploring. He slides down a pole, tries on boots and a hat, and when an alarm sounds George gets swept up with the engine crew and races off to the fire with them. George really cannot help since he is not a trained firefighter, but he does find a way to be helpful. He entertains the children who are a bit frightened by all the commotion. The fire chief who initially is a little disturbed with George's antics changes his tune when he gets compliments for having brought a fire monkey along. Once back at the fire house, all the kids and George get to ride on the fire truck. A typical George adventure that ends well and is really a vehicle for explaining more about firefighting than anything else. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
