Children's Literature

This nonfiction book is designed as a first reader, containing simple words and sentences along with photographs of the animals. It is one of the "Developing Reader" series, "Level 2," for first and second grade readers. The name of the animal is written at the top of the page, a short rhyming verse describes attributes of the animal, and several facts are given in a "Did you know?" box. A page of suggestions, "Reading together," tells how parents can help their children read by discussing the pictures, helping them recognize rhyming words, testing them with questions for understanding, and then using the quiz pages at the end of the text. The quiz pages ask questions such as, "Which fat animal has short legs?" and answers are provided in an upside?down box. A dictionary provides a small photo and meanings of a small group of words and another page lists key words with photos and simple sentences using the key words. The photos and rhymes should hold a young child's interest, and the overall makeup of the text creates a very good resource for increasing a child's reading vocabulary. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
