Children's Literature

A variety of vehicles are featured on the cover—trucks, cars, motorbikes, and more. Open the book and see a variety of cars, trucks, specialty trucks, motorbikes, emergency, and off the road vehicles. It certainly is not unusual to see cars of all shapes, sizes, and colors, and trucks seem to be everywhere. The parts of a large truck are identified. Special trucks used in construction such as a cement mixer and digger are featured. The fire truck is a big hook and ladder vehicle, and the ambulance is pictured, both of which are facing the reader and open, so kids can see what is inside the truck. Sometimes, bicycles are on the road, but the ones depicted with these young kids are off the road and on safe bicycle paths. Many will recognize the big yellow school bus, and some may recognize a farm tractor. At the end, there is a quiz to test comprehension, a lecture glossary of sorts, and then a list of key words that kids can use to make up their own sentences and stories. The title seems a bit misleading, since some of these vehicles would not normally be "on the road." Also, there does not seem to be any unifying theme, just a series of vehicles including bicycles. Kirkus Reviews

Well beyond Dick and Jane, this beginning reader makes learning seem effortless and fun. The jaunty layout of bright, crisp photographs and flowing font stand out before the textured, colorful backdrops. Each spread is devoted to a particular moving machine that one would find on the road, like cars, fire trucks, school buses and even bicycles, which are " . . . fun to do and healthy, too." Many pages offer brief highlights that identify parts of the vehicle, pointing out the cab or radiator of a semi-truck, for instance. The text is light and lilting, maintaining a balance between challenging and amusing. To further the learning benefits there is a section called, "Reading Together," which offers suggestions such as identifying rhymes and making up one's own. Also included are sections devoted to a brief dictionary, key words to use in a sentence and six questions titled, "What Do You Know?" for reading comprehension. This book works on many levels: visually, conceptually and educationally, enhancing this already successful Scholastic series. (Easy reader/nonfiction. 4-7)
