Overview

Growing up in Scotland, David Livingstone wanted to heal the bodies and souls of people. After completing his medical and Christian missionary training, he became the first European known to explore Africa's interior and to see some of that continent's most beautiful sights, including Victoria Falls, which he named. An outspoken critic against the slave trade, Livingstone described in letters and lectures the evils of slavery and encouraged commerce between Africans and Europeans.
