Library Journal

Laurel Bartlett's work as a Union spy during the Civil War gave her a way to assist her country, but with the war over she is uncertain about continuing her work with the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Since her romance to former Confederate soldier Ridge Granger is at a standstill, Laurel decides to accept an undercover assignment in California to investigate threats against the building of the transcontinental railroad. To Laurel's shock, Ridge shows up in California, hoping to convince her to marry him. Although there is nothing new or groundbreaking in Roddy's (Days of Deception, Chariot Victor, 1998) pleasant romantic mystery, it should please readers looking for an undemanding story with a subtle message of faith. Recommended, especially where Christian mysteries are in high demand.
