Overview

The calculating glint in his eyes revealed more than he wanted her to know.

Eve Sheridan cannot shake the suspicion that something is very wrong about her sister Rebecca's marriage. Giles Dawson, a handsome, debonair man, has taken Rebecca away to a dream cottage in the English countryside—but Rebecca's letters to Eve are filled with foreboding, even a sense of impending danger.

Then, without warning, Eve is thrust into a maelstrom of intrigue and terror. As she attempts to discover the truth about her sister's husband, she finds herself linked up with Pinkerton detective Alexander MacKay, and embroiled in a case that could cost her her life.

Will Eve's struggling faith to trust despite all obstacles prove strong enough to prevail against the evil that surrounds her?

School Library Journal

YA-A light mystery-romance set primarily in Richmond, Virginia in 1891. Eve Sheridan correctly mistrusts her new brother-in-law, but she doesn't really know why. However, scenes change and readers see his malevolent greed and the violence of his cronies. It is up to Eve and her new friend, a Pinkerton detective, to stop the evil. While her questions of religious faith are present, they are not overpowering. The enjoyable story, fast-moving plot, and realistic main characters make this a novel worth considering.
