Overview

During the Advent season, four women are murdered on four consecutive Sundays and only Burke Anderson can see the connection. While the police are stumped by the bizarre killings, Anderson, a former pastor, realizes that the victim's wounds resemble those Jesus suffered on the cross. Now it's up to Anderson to figure out who is behind these gruesome murders before another woman dies.

Someone is killing the wives of notable Atlanta men during the season of Advent. What elements connect these murders? Why have they been committed only on the Sundays leading up to Christmas Sunday? Pastoral counselor and detective-come-lately Burke Anderson is pulled into the case because of his wife Debbi, a journalist. Since the murders exhibit some rather bizarre religious elements, Anderson's expertise in Bible and theology proves valuable to the investigation. In his pursuit, he confronts the stock characters of the mystery genre-alcoholic medical examiners and self-aggrandizing detectives. While the ending strains credulity and the plot often devolves into theological discourse, Parker (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, LJ 11/1/94) draws the reader into a taut and highly suspenseful tale of good and evil. Highly recommended.
