Pastoral counselor and detective-come-lately Burke Anderson is pulled into the case because of his wife Debbi, a journalist. Since the murders exhibit some rather bizarre religious elements, Anderson's expertise in Bible and theology proves valuable to the investigation. In his pursuit, he confronts the stock characters of the mystery genre-alcoholic medical examiners and self-aggrandizing detectives. While the ending strains credulity and the plot often devolves into theological discourse, Parker (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, LJ 11/1/94) draws the reader into a taut and highly suspenseful tale of good and evil.
